Winter Roof Risks for SC

Dec 16, 2020 | Education

Living in South Carolina it’s easy to forget that we still deal with winter. We tend to see higher temperatures most of the year, usually leading us to milder winters than the rest of the country may be used to. But lately, we’ve seen the temperature drop and winter weather conditions move in. Freezing precipitation has started falling in some parts of the state and the nightly temperatures have even dropped below freezing. There are winter roof risks for SC, and you need to take them seriously. So we wanted to take a moment and inform you of a couple of them to help you weather this season.

Ice Accumulation

While we rarely see snow in the Lowcountry, ice and freezing conditions are not impossible. Icicles form when water runs off the roof, freeing on its way down. Ice dams occur in a similar fashion, but involve the water freezing on the surface of your roof, forming a barrier for water to run down. These accumulations can lead to water damage for your roof and further problems as the weather warms and storm season begins.

Attic Condensation

We don’t think about condensation in our attics. The warm air in the attic, rising from the interior of your home, hits the cold air underneath your roof leading to condensation. This works in the same way for your ice-cold drinks in the summer heat. The difference is that the condensation in your attic can lead to damage to the underside of your roof that may be hard to detect. Proper insulation should address this, but you should always stay vigilant.

If you suspect you might be dealing with one of these issues, or suspect that you may have some roof damage you haven’t been able to detect, contact an experienced roofing professional to help you with an inspection today. Don’t take these winter roof risks for SC for granted.
